It Takes Two to Launch Family Planning Campaign at Third Annual International Women’s Day Concert

5,000 people expected to attend concert to promote girls’ and women’s health and rights

Kampala, Uganda, February 26 – It Takes Two will launch its national youth-focused family planning campaign at Talent Africa’s International Women’s Day concert on March 8. The concert will recognize the importance of women’s health and rights, and feature performances by international and local female artists, including Nyanda, Cindy Sany, Lilian Mbabazi and Irene Ntale among others.

International Women’s Day recognizes women’s contributions around the world. For three years, Talent Africa has marked this occasion by hosting a concert to drive attention to key girls and women’s issues. In addition to performing, this year’s artists will serve as ambassadors for It Takes Two’s new campaign to highlight the need for increased access to family planning services in Uganda.

“International Women’s Day is a key moment to remind our leaders that we must invest in girls and women’s access to family planning information and services,” said Nyanda, pop star and It Takes Two Ambassador. “Young people, in particular, must be able to prevent unplanned pregnancies so they can live healthy lives and reach their full potential. It simply isn't right that the rate of teenage pregnancy in Uganda has stagnated at 24% since 2006. The It Takes Two campaign aims to change this, keep girls in school and build healthier, wealthier communities as a result."

In recent years, Ugandan policymakers have made high-profile political and financial commitments to improve access to family planning services and information. Despite this progress, many challenges persist: more than a third of Ugandan women want, but do not have access to modern methods of contraception, access to sexual education is poor and many girls are married at a young age. As a result, teen pregnancy and maternal death rates in Uganda remain high. Fortunately, increased access to family planning information and services can help reverse these trends.

It Takes Two aims to mobilize Ugandan youth as powerful advocates for family planning services and information. The campaign will provide young women and men with the tools they need to call on policymakers to address key family planning issues, including teen pregnancy, comprehensive sex education, and youth-friendly family planning services. The campaign will begin in Uganda before expanding to other countries around the world.

“Young people have the power to be today’s advocates and tomorrow’s leaders,” said Matti Navellou, It Takes Two Campaign Manager. “The campaign aims to generate attention for family planning issues by amplifying youth voices and holding policymakers accountable for their promises to girls and women throughout Uganda.”

Talent Africa is one of many local partners supporting the It Takes Two campaign. Other partners include Reach a Hand Uganda, COMMAT-Uganda, Partners in Population and Development–Africa Regional Office, Marie Stopes Uganda and mobile provider Airtel.
