Celebrate Solutions: How Girls Can Realize Their Power Through Sports

By: Melissa Hattab, Women Deliver

The Women’s Sports Foundation strives to make every girl active and healthy. And we know that when we invest in women’s health, everyone wins. Their mission is one we at Women Deliver support wholeheartedly – “To advance the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity." Founded in 1974 by tennis legend, Billie Jean King, the Women's Sports Foundation is dedicated to advancing the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity.

The Foundation has several different programs and initiatives, such as “Sports 4 Life,” to increase the participation and retention of African-American and Hispanic girls, ages 11-18, in developmental youth sports programs. “GoGirlGo!” uses sports and physical activity to improve the health and wellness of sedentary girls has reached over one million girls and provided more than $4.6 million in funding to girl-serving organizations.

The Women’s Sports Foundation, and Women Deliver, want to see more Mia Hamms, Venus and Serena Williams, and Maria Sharapovas, who are railing against the all too common stereotypes that “sports are for boys,” or that playing sports is not “lady-like.”

Ashley Fiolek, 2009 WMX Champion and two time X game gold medalist said that the Women’s Sports Foundation, “shaped my life. It helped my personality. It helped me become more confident. I wasn’t shy anymore. It helped me grow as a person, and hopefully in my life later on too.”
